Running a PROXY client on an ASUS router

First find the firmware version, shown at the top of the router’s web interface next to Firmware Version. It decides where the client lives. Every version can import the OpenVPN file from your Bebra dashboard and also handles PPTP.

Updated

Which firmware do you have

3.0.0.4.388 or later

VPN → VPN Fusion. A profile can be limited to chosen devices. Steps below.

Before 3.0.0.4.388

VPN → VPN Client tab. See the older menu.

Setting up VPN Fusion

  1. Download a server file

The file comes from your Bebra dashboard, under Router → Other routers. Click Get router settings, then Download .OVPN next to the server for your country.

  2. Create a profile

Sign in at www.asusrouter.com (or the router’s IP, such as 192.168.50.1) and go to VPN → VPN Fusion. Click the add icon, choose OpenVPN as the type and give the profile a name, such as the country.

  3. Import the file and the login

Click Import .ovpn file, pick the file and wait until the page says the upload is complete. Then type the login and password from your dashboard, because the file doesn’t include them.

  4. Turn it on

Click Apply and Enable and wait for Connected. To keep some devices off Bebra, switch off Apply to all devices and pick the ones that should use it.

Firmware before 3.0.0.4.388

On older firmware the client is under Advanced Settings, in the VPN section, on the VPN Client tab. Click Add profile at the bottom and open the OpenVPN tab. Enter a description and the login and password from your dashboard, then use Choose File to select the .ovpn file and click Upload. When the page says Complete, click OK.

The profile now appears in the list. Click Activate on its row. A tick next to the profile means the router is connected.

PPTP. The profile window also has a PPTP tab, which needs no file. Put the server IP in the server field and the login and password below it. PPTP is weaker than OpenVPN, so turn it on only if OpenVPN won’t connect.

What to leave alone. VPN Server and Instant Guard in the same section let devices into your home network from outside, such as your phone while you travel. Bebra runs through the client, so their settings can stay as they are.

ASUS setup questions

The profile won’t connect

Check the login and password, ideally by copying them from your dashboard. Next, try the file for a different server. Each file has a backup TCP address, which helps when a provider blocks UDP. If nothing gets through, the provider may be blocking OpenVPN entirely, and the Bebra app on your devices is the next thing to try.

Only some devices go through Bebra

The profile in VPN Fusion has Apply to all devices switched off. Turn it on, or add the missing devices to the profile.

Can VPN Fusion run two countries at once?

Not with one login. A login carries one connection at a time, so a second profile using it disconnects the first. Keep a profile per country and switch them on one at a time.
